Scoring, Discount Factors, and Points
Everything about how match scores translate into rating changes, including discount factors and play compensation
Scoring in ServeLeague goes beyond simple win/loss tracking. The system uses discount factors, play compensation, and rating bands to produce fair and meaningful point exchanges after every match.
Rating Bands
The rating difference between two players determines the base points exchanged. Bigger gaps mean bigger rewards for upsets and smaller penalties for expected losses. There are 8 rating bands from 0-25 points apart (equal skill) to 500+ points apart (large skill gap).
Discount Factors
How close the match was affects the final point exchange. A dominant 3-0 win earns full points (factor 1.0), while a tight 3-2 win only earns 75% of the base value (factor 0.75). In best-of-7 formats, a 4-3 win yields just 50%.
Best of 5
- 3-0: 100% of base points
- 3-1: 90% of base points
- 3-2: 75% of base points
Play Compensation
Every player who completes a match against an opponent within 500 rating points receives +2 compensation points, regardless of the result. This incentivizes participation and ensures everyone benefits from playing.
Singles vs. Doubles
ServeLeague maintains separate ratings for singles and doubles play. The same formula applies to both, but for doubles the team average rating is used when calculating point exchanges. This keeps each format's skill tracking independent and accurate.
